The Story

Who is The Workbench 3DTM?

Bryan McFarland has a BA in fine art and  certificates in 3D design using Fusion 360.  He operates The Workbench 3D, a small shop for those with big dreams.  From decoratives to functional art, he can help leverage your 3D revolution.

What is functional art?  In the world of 3D design, functional art is incredibly broad.  Beautiful and creative furniture, shoes and wheels are all examples.  Also things like ceramic dishes, cookie cutters, tools and picture frames can be functional art.  There's a lot of overlap between industrial design and functional art and where the two diverge is an unknown.  For art to be functional, it needs to achieve a level of engineering to accommodate its use.  This is also true for industrial design.  Bryan McFarland is an artist that uses engineering software to achieve a level of functionality within his 3D artwork.

Besides fabricating his own 3D art products, he's dedicated to providing exceptional 3D printing and design services for imagineers big and small. His commitment to custom design and creative problem-solving sets him apart.

Bryan uses an array of technology in the creation of his designs such as 3D scanners, state of the art CAD software and a very capable 3D printer.  He also has various methods for conducting flexural and tensile tests along with digital tools for measuring tight tolerances when functional art requires engineering.

Regarding fees for service, the time commitment for design, printing and the materials used are all considered.  Some projects need extensive design and several prototype iterations, while others are basic.  Basic projects could be done for as little as $50 while more complex projects could cost as much as $200/day for designing something that is completely new and different.  Likewise, some 3D printing materials cost only $20 per pound while others cost $150 per pound.
